Why Does My Body Confidence Change So Much From Day to Day?
Why Does My Body Confidence Change So Much From Day to Day?
Have you ever got dressed one morning, looked in the mirror and thought you looked absolutely fine?
Then the next day — in pretty much exactly the same body — nothing looks right.
Your clothes feel wrong. You notice every bit of yourself you don’t particularly like. And before long you’re wondering whether you’ve gained weight, changed shape or somehow managed to look completely different overnight.
You probably haven’t.
What has changed is how you’re seeing your body that day.
And that matters, because body image can change even when your body hasn’t.
It isn’t always about your body
When we feel bad about our body, the automatic conclusion tends to be:
Something about my body needs to change.
But body image doesn’t work that neatly.
How you see yourself can shift depending on how tired you are, how stressed you feel, what’s happened that day, what you’re wearing or what you’ve been looking at online.
Sometimes you’re already having a rubbish day and your body simply becomes the easiest thing to blame.
That doesn’t mean the feeling isn’t real.
It just means the feeling isn’t necessarily evidence that there is suddenly something wrong with your body.
And that’s an important difference.
What happened before you looked in the mirror?
This is something I’d much rather you get curious about than immediately start criticising yourself.
What was going on before you decided your body looked awful?
Had you been scrolling?
Had you tried something on that didn’t fit quite how you expected?
Had someone started talking about dieting, weight or what they were doing to “be good”?
Are you exhausted? Stressed? Already feeling a bit rubbish about yourself?
Because it’s very easy to go from one uncomfortable moment straight to:
“Right. I need to do something about my body.”
And we know where that can lead.
New rules. New plan. Monday.
Before you get there, try asking:
“What else is going on here?”
Sometimes it really is the trousers
Clothes can change how we feel about our body incredibly quickly.
You can be getting on perfectly happily with your day, put on a pair of trousers that digs in, pulls somewhere you don’t want it to or simply doesn’t feel good — and suddenly it’s your entire body that’s the problem.
It isn’t.
Sometimes the trousers are just annoying.
Your body hasn’t failed because something in your wardrobe doesn’t fit you comfortably today.
Clothes are supposed to fit your body. You are not supposed to make your body fit your clothes.
That is one I’d quite like us all to remember.
A bad body-image day does not need a new diet
This is the bit I really want you to notice.
You feel uncomfortable in your body at 9am and by lunchtime you’ve mentally decided what you’re cutting out, how much exercise you need to do and that this time you really are going to get back on track.
That is a lot of power to hand over to one difficult morning.
You don’t have to act on every negative thought you have about your body.
You can let it be uncomfortable without immediately turning it into a project.
And this is where one of my favourite questions comes in:
“What would help me feel supported right now?”
Not: How do I fix my body?
Not: What should I stop eating?
Not: How much exercise do I need to do?
What would actually support you?
Perhaps you need to put something more comfortable on. Get away from the mirror. Get off Instagram. Go outside. Move because you know it helps your head rather than because you’re trying to burn something off.
Or perhaps you just need to get on with your day and not give this feeling any more attention than it deserves.
Body confidence isn’t loving your body every day
I think we’ve made body confidence sound far more dramatic than it needs to be.
You do not have to stand in front of the mirror every morning thinking you look incredible.
There will be days when you don’t particularly like what you see.
That’s normal.
The work is in what happens next.
Does that feeling decide what you eat?
Does it decide whether you exercise?
Does it change what you wear, whether you go out or whether you let somebody take your photo?
Or can you think:
“I’m not feeling great about my body today — but I’m still getting on with my life.”
For me, that is a much more useful version of body confidence.
You don’t need to wait for a better body day
If confidence depends on liking your reflection first, you can end up waiting an awfully long time to live your life.
You wait to wear the clothes.
You get out of the photo.
You turn down the invitation.
You tell yourself you’ll do all of those things when you feel better about your body.
But you can feel self-conscious and still go.
You can dislike the photograph and still be glad you were in it.
You can have a difficult body-image day without deciding that your body needs punishing for it.
Your life does not need to wait for you to feel differently about your body.
And sometimes that is exactly where confidence starts.
